MS dance

Yesterday, I went to the first middle school dance this year. It was hosted by the 9th grade so they sold all the stuff, picked the theme, got to be the DJ's and basically did all the work. Each grade will host a dance at least once.

At first I expected the dance to be in the gym but it was in a place called the MS commons (about the size of a class room) and the hall outside of the MS commons. I thought it would be less crowded but almost the whole middle school was there (around 100 people). There were lots of lights that I did not know that the school had. They had three black lights, a disco ball, a penguin night-light and a whole lot of flashing lights. Now remember, this was a room the size of a classroom with 80 students jumping up and down like crazy. I was actually thinking of not going because I thought it was a bring-a-date kind of dance but then I realized most of my friends were, so I went. That was a good choice because my earlier thought was wrong.

The entrance fee was 200 yen or 1.6 dollars. A piece of pizza was also 200 yen and a drink was 150 yen or 1.2 dollars. It was a little pricey but it was a fundraiser for Cambodia. But you could get the combo set (not for me) and you get entrance, one slice of pizza and one drink for 500 yen or 4.1 USD and you save 50 yen. The pizza was not my favourite kind (because it had mayonnaise on it) but after 2 hours of dancing it hit the spot. They also sold candy, rice crackers and the pricing was really flexible. The theme was glow in the dark so they also sold glow-sticks. The original deal was 1 for 100 yen but then for me they gave me 3 for 100 so I told my friends about the deal and then my friend got 4 for 100!

The thing is, almost no one actually knew what the dance was to that particular song was so everyone just got in a circle and started jumping up and down. Sometimes a grade would do a huddle and someone would go in the middle and show off their moves. One of the new kids was a really good breakdancer!

I really can’t wait for 6th grade’s turn to host the dance. I just hope I don’t have to do the pizza sales because there was this one kid that had to do it the whole time and he was so bored. I hope I get to do the DJ or glowstick sales.

The MS dance was really fun and I am exited for the next one. Remember to put your e-mail up top to get a notice every time an exiting story has arrived!

Middle school!

On Thursday, I started middle school! At first I was really nervous but after two days of it, it turned out to be really fun. I am happy with my class because one of my really good friends is in my class. I wish more of my friends were in my class but I am happy. My advisor is also really nice but he can't be around much because he is a 7th grade teacher.

The main difference in middle school in my opinion, is changing classes. Almost all of the classes that we have are taught by different teachers. All except for english and social studies that are taught by the same teacher. There is also this thing called exploratories. These periods, you chose what you are going to do in the time slot at the beginning of the semester. Some examples are fencing, movie making, pottery or french.

In 6th grade we have two classrooms, 6-1 and 6-2. Each class goes to classes together, goes to P.E. and art together. In each class, (6-1, 6-2), there are two advisories. An advisory is a small group of about 10 kids who are assigned to an advisor. My advisor is the 7th, 8th and 9th grade math teacher. The other advisor of 6-1 is a Japanese teacher. The advisor will advise you throughout 6th grade and try to make sure you don't fail.

Science sounds a lot more fun than last year, because we had to sign a safety contract and that leads me to believe that we get to do some pretty fun experiments. So now instead of studying things like the ecosystems, we get to study heat sound and light energy. We even get to wear lab coats!

Our math teacher is really nice. He makes jokes a lot and is very funny. He is not too strict but he keeps the class in order. We get to have 3 parties with him; early winter break, pi day and end of year. On Monday we are going to set something up called ALEKS which is a math website where you take online quizzes. I am really looking forward to that.

I am really starting to enjoy middle school but I am still a little nervous. I really want to pick my exploritories. I am much less worried now.

Thank you for reading this. Sorry if I am not clear on something. I might update this post later when I learn more like exploratories. Remember to put your email at the top of the page to get a notice when the next awesome adventure is posted!
